Insulation for the Skillion Roof

Insulation for the Skillion Roof

The skillion roof, also known as a monopitch roof, is a popular industrial style roof used in residential construction throughout New Zealand. Typically constructed with a single angled plane rising from one side of the dwelling to the other, the design adds size to the interior space while also giving the visual appeal of a modern, raking ceiling.

There are a few things that need consideration when specifying/installing insulation into a skillion roof. The design of a skillion roof presents limited spacing between the sheathing and the ceiling joists which makes this type of roof difficult to insulate with traditional insulation. On top of the already limited space, it is an important requirement to allow for a ventilation gap. The New Zealand Building Code requires a minimum 25mm clearance between the flexible roof underlay or membrane/sarking substrate and insulation for ventilation.

Considering these aspects, Autex developed GreenStuf® Skillion Roof Blanket, specifically designed to provide high thermal performance in restricted spaces. Available in a range of performance options, GreenStuf Skillion Roof Blanket is pre-cut to fit standard timber framing widths. More information on this below:

  • R2.9 Skillion Roof Blanket 115mm Nominal Thickness – to fit 140mm timber and maintain 25mm clear space to the roof underlay
  • R3.2 Skillion Roof Blanket 165mm Nominal Thickness – to fit 190mm timber and maintain 25mm clear space to the roof underlay
  • R3.4 Skillion Roof Blanket 165mm Nominal Thickness – to fit 190mm timber and maintain 25mm clear space to the roof underlay
  • R3.6 Skillion Roof Blanket 165mm Nominal Thickness – to fit 190mm timber and maintain 25mm clear space to the roof underlay
