Auckland Airport’s Transport Hub
An insulated carpark highlighting the value of sustainable, people-centred infrastructure
The project
Auckland Airport’s new Transport Hub has significantly improved the passenger experience, providing smarter, smoother journeys with an efficient, covered drop-off zone and multi-level carpark building. Designed by Peddlethorp, the project had ambitious sustainability goals, admirably achieving a 5 Green Star Parksmart Goal credential through intentional design and material decisions.
Due to its designation as a primarily functional space, sustainability and human comfort is often overlooked in carpark design. Excessive noise and reverberation can cause discomfort and fatigue, putting unnecessary stress on the traveller. Similarly, without insulation, carparks can become stiflingly hot in summer and freezing in winter. Left unchecked, these temperature changes make the transition between the car and the airport challenging—especially for children, elderly, and disabled passengers.
The solution
Determined to deliver an environment that would maintain comfortable temperatures, reduce noise pollution and echo, align with the sustainability credentials, and stick to the project’s aesthetic values, Peddlethorp specified GreenStuf® Car Park and Acoustic Soffit Liner.
“Sustainable insulation isn’t just about being ‘green’, it’s about future-proofing projects for future regulations, reducing lifecycle costs, and delivering healthier and more energy-efficient buildings which offer more long-term value,” says GreenStuf Account Manager T.J Jhagroo.
“GreenStuf Carpark and Acoustic Soffit Liner (ASL) was a great solution as it offers thermal and acoustic performance well over the minimum standards required for the project. Plus, because it’s a 100% polyester insulation product made from a minimum of 57% recycled content, it also delivered maximum Green points for this 5 Green Star-rated building.”
As the first meeting place for domestic and international visitors, aesthetics were equally important. Peddlethorp opted for ASL in Grey with Black Topping to create a sleek, understated finish that will retain its appeal for years to come.

The result
“The Transport Hub has transformed the arrival and departure experience at New Zealand’s busiest international gate,” T.J says. “The GreenStuf Carpark and Acoustic Soffit Liner with Black Topping not only contributes to the overall building performance, but also upholds the high-quality aesthetic required for such a prominent building.”
Contributing to a project with such a strong focus on sustainability and wellbeing was important for the GreenStuf team.
“GreenStuf’s sustainability mission is to positively impact our environment, our people, and the next generation, which was echoed by the goals of The Transport Hub project. The hub is a key transport precinct that will support Auckland Airport’s long-term growth, while reflecting their commitment to sustainable infrastructure.”
